On October 9, the Austin City Council will vote on whether to move the Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center to Oltorf — just steps from Travis High School.
- Every day, hundreds of unsupervised kids walk past the proposed site on their way to and from school.
- The City is rushing a $4M acquisition without a clear plan for how it will serve the unhoused or protect the community.
- Better, safer alternative sites exist — but they’re being ignored in the rush to push this through.
This is not just about one neighborhood. If we don’t stop this, it could be your district next.
Why This Matters
- Inappropriate location: Kids should not be put in harm’s way. Travis HS students would pass by the proposed site twice daily.
- Irresponsible process: Council is being asked to approve millions without safeguards or a serious long-term strategy.
- Ignored alternatives: Safer, better-suited sites exist — but the City isn’t considering them.
This isn’t about ignoring the homeless crisis. It’s about finding real solutions, not shifting problems.
